A firing right-hand point inside the Cape Point Nature Reserve, Buffels Bay demands a massive S to SSW swell before it even wakes up. It needs 6ft-plus to start breaking and can hold well beyond 15ft when a cyclonic system drives a proper groundswell into False Bay's protected window. The wave jacks suddenly from deep water onto the outside of the point, ledging hard before walling down the rocks into the small bay below. On the right swell it runs 150-300m, and on truly exceptional days stretches beyond 500m. This is not a wave for developing surfers: the speed, power, and rock-lined paddle-out demand serious experience. The reserve setting keeps it quiet mid-week, but word travels fast when a swell hits and veterans materialise quickly. Bottom: reef/point. Season: late autumn to winter, peak June-August. Consistency: low, swell-dependent. Getting caught inside is genuinely dangerous here, boards get snapped and injuries are real, so know your limits before paddling out.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Empty mid-week, crowded when it's on. Locals know this break deeply and they protect it. Patience in the lineup is not optional. Wait your turn, earn your waves, do not drop in. The localism is real and the community that surfs this spot has surfed it for decades. Respect that or don't paddle out.

Access & Facilities

Entry is via the Table Mountain National Park at Cape Point, so a park entry fee applies. Keep vehicles secured and do not leave valuables visible. Baboons are active in the reserve and will investigate unattended gear. The wave is on the False Bay side of the point. Water is cold year-round, with winter temps dropping toward 12-14°C.

Nearby Alternatives

If Buffels isn't firing, the southern Cape coast has options depending on swell direction and size. Dungeons at Hout Bay handles similar big SW groundswell on the Atlantic side. Smaller, more accessible righthand points along the False Bay coastline can pick up remnant swell when Buffels is too big or the swell angle is off.
