A fickle left-hand reef break on South Africa's Southern Cape, Kleinmond sits just west of Hermanus and delivers hollow, fast walls when the conditions align. It needs a SW to S swell in the 3-10ft range, with N or NW winds keeping the face clean. All tides are workable, though the wave rarely strings together more than 50m on average days. On bigger swells the left can stretch to 150-300m, but that size also triggers a serious outgoing rip funnelled through a deep channel between the rocks and the break. That rip is the main hazard here. Experienced surfers only. A fishermen's channel runs alongside the lineup, so stay alert to lines in the water. Bottom: reef. Season: consistent Southern Hemisphere winter swells, best April through September. Consistency: fickle, needs specific swell direction. Paddle out when the swell is below 5ft to avoid the rip activating in full force.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Weekdays you will likely have the break to yourself. Weekends see a few surfers but the crowd rarely builds. The fickle nature and demanding paddle-out in size keep the lineup self-selecting. No reports of heavy localism, but respect applies anywhere this empty and this dependent on conditions.

Access & Facilities

Kleinmond is easy to locate on the N2 coastal route just before Hermanus. Parking is close to the break. The rip channel is shared with fishermen working the rocks, so give them space and watch for lines. No formal surf facilities in the immediate area, but Hermanus is a short drive with food, fuel, and supplies.

Nearby Alternatives

Hermanus itself has a handful of spots that pick up similar SW swells when Kleinmond is maxed out or the rip makes paddling too punishing. Onrus and Buffeljagsbaai are worth checking on smaller, cleaner days in the same swell window.
