Lookout Beach is the main town beach of Plettenberg Bay, a beach break that oscillates between mushy close-outs and genuinely fun peaks when the sand banks align. It needs a SW to SE swell, works across all tides, and comes alive when winter groundswells clean up the banks and the wind swings more westerly. Size range is broad: it starts doing something at under 1ft and can hold overhead-plus on its better days, though the shape deteriorates quickly in big, onshore conditions. Accessible to all skill levels, it draws a mixed crowd, quiet mid-week but noticeably busy on weekends when the town fills with Cape Town weekenders. Bottom: sand. Season: works year-round but improves meaningfully in autumn and winter. Consistency: moderate, with frequent close-out tendencies outside good bank cycles. The river mouth end of the beach tends to hold better shape, especially when a small channel forms between the lagoon and the sea.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Weekdays are relaxed with few surfers out. Weekends bring a crowd, especially during school holidays when Plett's population swells significantly. The vibe is generally mellow and localism is not a notable issue. Beginners and intermediates mix easily here.

Access & Facilities

Head straight to Lookout Beach in Plett town. Parking, cafes, and facilities are right there. The beach is well-serviced and easy to reach. Water quality is generally good. No serious hazards beyond normal beach-break shore dump.

Nearby Alternatives

When Lookout is maxed out or closing down, the Plett area has better options. Keurbooms and spots toward Keurboomstrand can offer cleaner conditions on the same swell. Central Beach in town is another option for smaller, calmer days.
