A stretched-out beach break on the Southern Cape coast, Swartvlei sits between Sedgefield and the famous Gerickes Point, offering multiple peaks from the rivermouth all the way to the point. SW to SE swells are the ticket, and the wave rewards lower tides where the shore dump cleans up into punchy, hollow sections. Works in a wide size window, from knee-high fun to solid 6ft-plus when a proper pulse rolls through, with offshore conditions typical under the Berg wind or a northerly. The crowd is negligible outside peak South African summer holidays, when Pretoria families fill the adjacent caravan park and non-surfers outnumber the lineup. Bottom: sand. Season: summer primary, but fires on swell any time of year. Consistency: moderate to good. Bring a fish or a shortboard and pick your peak early, because by mid-morning the onshore kicks in along this stretch of coast.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Weekdays are nearly empty year-round. Summer school holidays (December to January) bring a spike of holiday crowds on the beach, but the actual surf lineup stays relatively uncrowded. No notable localism reported. Standard lineup respect applies.

Access & Facilities

Swartvlei is signposted off the N2 just west of Sedgefield, roughly 15 minutes from George and 10 minutes from Knysna. The caravan park at the entrance provides basic amenities and parking. No surf hire on site, stock up in George or Wilderness. Water quality is generally clean, though the rivermouth end can be murky after heavy rain.

Nearby Alternatives

Gerickes Point, a short walk or drive west, offers a proper left-hand point setup and is worth checking when Swartvlei is blown out or too small. Wilderness Beach to the west and Victoria Bay, a dependable right-hander about 20 minutes back toward George, round out the immediate options when this stretch is not firing.
