Two reef setups anchor Mossel Bay's surf scene on the Southern Cape's Garden Route, and the contrast between them is the whole story. Inner Pool is a friendly righthand runner that works best at higher tide, reeling through consistently enough to make it a go-to for local intermediates. A short paddle away, Outer Pool is the real prize: a heavier righthand reef that throws genuine barrels over its inside section at lower tide when a solid SE to SW swell fills in. Both spots work waist-high to overhead, and the window runs year-round with decent summer and winter pulses. Be aware of Peanut Butter rock and the rest of the scattered reef, rock jump-offs on entry, and a documented shark presence in the area. Inner Pool handles crowds poorly, so arrive early or accept that locals will dominate the sets. Bottom: Rocky reef. Season: Year-round. Consistency: Good.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Inner Pool draws regular crowds and the takeoff zone is tight, so the lineup fills fast on good days. Locals know every rock and will make that obvious. Outer Pool spreads things out a little but still draws its share. Dawn patrol is the practical move at Inner Pool. Respect the pecking order, don't snake, and things stay civil.

Access & Facilities

Park directly in front of the break. Entry is via rock jump-offs, so study the sets before committing. It is a working harbor town, so water quality is fair rather than clear. Food, fuel, and board repair are all available in town, which is well-serviced on the Garden Route between Cape Town and Port Elizabeth.

Nearby Alternatives

The broader Garden Route has multiple options when Mossel Bay is blown out or too sharky for comfort. Wilderness and Vic Bay sit within an hour and pick up similar SE swells on different exposures. When south swells push bigger, check the more exposed beaches further east toward Jeffreys Bay.
