A powerful right-hand point wrapping into a sheltered bay on the Southern Cape coast, Still Bay delivers ruler-edged walls and occasional tube sections across rides that can stretch 150-300m on a good day. The wave needs a solid SE or S-SW swell to get going, starting to show from 3-5ft and holding well past 12ft as big SW swells wrap and halve in size before hitting the point. Westerly winds are ideal offshore, a NW can bump up the face unpredictably, similar to J-Bay in that regard. Low tide tends to favour the outside section, high tide the inside. Estuary-influenced water and a relentless rip pushing down the point make this a spot for experienced, strong paddlers only. Bottom: point. Season: April to August. Consistency: medium. Bring a board that handles power and a plan for the rip before you paddle out.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Weekends draw crowds, though 40-50 surfers can co-exist when the rip is running and naturally spreads the lineup. The surrounding area has plenty of alternatives to absorb overflow, so if the peak is stacked, explore rather than hassle. Respect the local crew who know how to read the rip.

Access & Facilities

Head toward the harbour and take the dirt road just before it. No formal parking or facilities on site. The estuary nearby can affect water quality after rain, so check conditions before paddling out. Hazards are mainly the rip and scattered rocks along the point.

Nearby Alternatives

Victoria Bay, roughly toward George, offers a popular right pointbreak as a quality alternative when Still Bay is out of swell or too crowded. Jongensfontein to the west handles smaller SE swell on a reefbreak when the main point is firing too big. The broader Southern Cape coastline from Mossel Bay through to Plettenberg Bay lines up multiple reef and beach options across all swell sizes.
