San Miguel is the most consistent right-hand point in Northern Baja, a cobblestone rivermouth that NW swells thread through underwater canyons to produce long, tapered walls comparable to Rincon or Trestles. W to NW swell is the money window. S swells are blocked by Punta Banda and Todos Santos Island. Offshore NE winds are critical, but they clock around reliably by 11am almost every day, so dawn patrol is not a suggestion here, it is mandatory. Mid to high tide smooths out the sections that go hollow and sectiony at low. Head-high to double-overhead is the sweet spot, but the wave does not close out as it gets bigger. Bottom is cobblestone with some urchins. Season runs November through March. Consistency is medium to high for Northern Baja standards. The takeoff is steep and fast, the wall stretches and grows down the line, and the crowd is heavy and territorial. Get there early, read the lineup before paddling out, and know that a river of questionable health empties right into the takeoff zone.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

San Miguel is consistently crowded. Localism is real and has been documented by visiting surfers for decades. The lineup rewards confident surfing and respectful paddling. Do not snake, do not drop in, and do not paddle straight to the peak on arrival. Sit on the shoulder, read the rotation, and earn your waves. Early morning sessions before the wind shifts are both cleaner and slightly less competitive.

Access & Facilities

Park in the dirt lot at the point. Camping is available on-site for a fee. Ensenada is the nearest town with full services, food, water, and accommodation. The river mouth at the takeoff zone carries runoff that makes water quality suspect, especially after rain. Rocks and occasional urchins are the primary physical hazards.

Nearby Alternatives

When San Miguel is blown out after 11am, K38 (El Morro) offers a fast hollow right over an urchin farm about 38km north, though it runs even more crowded. K58/La Fonda to the north delivers consistent barreling beachbreak with a different crowd and slightly more forgiving access. Shipwrecks to the south handles NW swell with good N wind protection and holds size.
