A beach break with a left-point component, La Fonda sits at K-58 on Mex 1 in Baja Norte and draws a steady stream of San Diego day-trippers and Baja expats year-round. It takes swell from S through WNW, with SW and W swells delivering the most consistent shape, and easterly offshores clean it up best. Low to mid tide is the sweet spot, and the wave starts showing at under 1ft but needs chest-high to around double-overhead to really get going. The left point and adjacent beach break peaks can handle intermediate surfers reasonably well, but Forecasts flag it as one of the more demanding waves in the area, so beginners should look elsewhere. Bottom: rivermouth sand and rock. Season: summer through autumn for south swells, winter for NW energy. Consistency: reliable and surfable most of the year. Petty theft from vehicles has been reported at the campsite parking area, so travel light and lock everything.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Weekends bring noticeable crowds, driven by easy Mex 1 access from San Diego and a well-established expat community. Localism is rated doable rather than heavy, but the regular crew knows who belongs. Weekday mornings are the obvious move for a quieter lineup. Compared to Rosarito to the north, the vibe here is noticeably more relaxed.

Access & Facilities

Pull off Mex 1 at K-58 near Los Alisitos Hotel, pay the day-use fee at the campsite, and take the cliff path down to the beach. Cold outdoor showers are available at the campground. Fish tacos and cold drinks are close by. Water quality runs fair year-round but dips after rain or a nearby sewage event.

Nearby Alternatives

San Miguel, just to the north toward Ensenada, is the stronger wave when it's firing but draws a heavier local crowd on weekends. Rosarito's beach breaks are closer to San Diego but trade water quality and vibe for convenience.
