A remote point break on the northern Baja coast, Punta Baja delivers long, rolling left-handers when the swell cooperates, sitting well off the highway south of El Rosario. NW and SW swells are the ticket, both funneling into the point and producing rides that stretch well beyond 150m on good days. Offshore winds typically kick in during the afternoon, cleaning up the face and making late sessions the call. The water runs cold year-round, kelp becomes a factor at low tide, and the wave shuts down without enough swell, making this a genuine hit-or-miss destination. Mid to high tide is the move. Bottom: point over mixed reef and kelp. Season: fall through spring for consistent NW groundswell. Consistency: fickle. Pack a longboard, bring layers for cold nights, and lower your expectations for any single session since walking away skunked is a real possibility at this fickle stretch of coast.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Weekdays you may have it entirely to yourself. Weekends see a handful of surfers at most. The resident at the point, a local fisherman, is reportedly friendly and open to trading his catch for a cold beer. No reported localism pressure, but remote spots deserve quiet respect regardless.

Access & Facilities

From El Rosario, turn right at the first mercado and take the first dirt road heading west. There is a makeshift bridge over a stream en route. Follow west past the village toward the radar tower on the hill, a sign marks the turn. Keep right to avoid ending up at Punta Carlos. There are no facilities. Cliffs above the beach offer a camp setup with a stairway down. Bring all supplies including water, fuel, and food from El Rosario.

Nearby Alternatives

If Punta Baja is not firing, The Wall farther south has been noted as a reliable overhead alternative when NW swell is in the water. El Rosario area offers additional options for surfers willing to explore the Baja 1 corridor.
