A ledgey left-hand barrel peeling over shallow rock on the northern shore of Lake Michigan, Marisol North Point is one of the only spots on the Great Lakes capable of breaking boards on a solid day. NW to NE fetch drives the best swells, and the wave works across all tides, though a strong south wind triggers a nasty rip that drags surfers around the point fast. Suited to experienced surfers only: drops are late, fast, and close to vertical over a rock ledge sitting roughly three feet deep. Crowds are essentially non-existent on weekdays and weekends alike, but good days are rare. Bottom: rocky reef. Season: late fall through winter, when Great Lakes fetch peaks. Consistency: low to moderate, working days measured in weeks per year, not months. Bring a helmet and booties, the ledge is unforgiving and the water is cold year-round.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Lineup is consistently empty, a reflection of both the cold and the rarity of quality days rather than any secrecy. Experienced Great Lakes surfers know what it is. Respect the fact that good days here are precious and keep sessions tight.

Access & Facilities

A parking lot faces the break directly, street parking is available when the lot fills. Being near the main public beach means basic amenities are close, but this is Lake Michigan in winter: pack warm layers, hot drinks, and dry bags. The current risk on south-wind days is serious, if swept around the point, ride the current shoreward, exit the water, and re-paddle from further down the beach.

Nearby Alternatives

When Marisol North Point is flat or too south-wind-affected, check the main beach break nearby for smaller, more forgiving peaks. Wider Lake Michigan setups further north or south may pick up different fetch windows when northwest swells are absent.
