A bowly right-hand point over rocky reef just south of Rosarito, K-38 punches above its milepost number as one of Baja Norte's most consistent and accessible waves. It catches S, SW, W, and WNW swells year-round, with summer through winter delivering the most reliable windows. Offshore winds from the NE and E clean up the face nicely. Best from mid to low tide at head-high to double overhead, where the bowl section links into a moderately long wall. Proficient surfers will get the most from it, though it's forgiving enough that improving intermediates can handle the reef. Crowds are moderate and reflect its staple status on the Baja Norte circuit. Bottom: rocky reef. Season: summer, autumn, winter. Consistency: reliable. Watch for urchins on the reef and keep an eye on your car at the parking area near the hotel.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Moderate crowds are the norm here. It's a well-known stop on the Baja road-trip circuit and draws San Diego day-trippers regularly. Localism is present but manageable. Paddle out with standard lineup etiquette, don't snake sets, and you'll be fine. Dawn patrol on weekdays is the move if you want elbow room.

Access & Facilities

Park at the hotel adjacent to the break or pay a security guard to watch your vehicle. Petty theft has been reported so don't leave valuables in the car. Watch for exposed rocks and urchins on the paddle-out and during the exit, especially at lower tides. Water quality is generally fair but can dip after heavy rain or sewage events.

Nearby Alternatives

If K-38 is maxed out or too crowded, the stretch of reef breaks continuing south along Baja Norte offers similar right-hand setups that absorb the same swell windows. K-58 and the reefs around Ensenada pick up more size on larger W and NW swells and are worth scouting on the drive south.
