A right-hand point south of Rosarito that many visiting surfers hit first on the run down Baja 1, Calafia is accessible, honest, and fun when a solid S to SW swell fills in. Offshore in the daily NW wind, it works best mid to high tide on 3-8ft south energy, with SW also producing rideable walls. Bigger NW wraps can fire the nearby reefs, so there is almost always something in the area. Beginner-to-intermediate surfers will find it approachable, though the lineup draws expats and weekend crossers, keeping crowds moderate. Bottom: rock-reef point. Season: June through September. Consistency: medium. Water quality runs urban given the proximity to Rosarito and Tijuana, so check conditions after rain. Current runs hard on solid south swells, so pace your paddling and pick your moment on the shoulder.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

The vibe is welcoming rather than heavy. Expect expats and San Diego day-trippers on weekends. A cliff-side restaurant adds a social backdrop. You are more likely to encounter a grumpy older California expat than genuine localism. Midweek mornings are the quietest window.

Access & Facilities

Drive south on Highway 1 libre toward Ensenada, roughly 30 minutes from the border past Mushrooms. There is a paid car park. A well-worn footpath descends the cliff. Time your paddle-out carefully, as rocks and shore break demand attention. No surf facilities on site, but hotels, restaurants, and clubs line the cliff. Water quality is fair at best.

Nearby Alternatives

K38 (El Morro) to the north is faster and hollower over an urchin-studded reef, for experienced surfers comfortable in a busy lineup. San Miguel to the south is a powerful right point that lights up on W to NW swell and rewards the extra drive.
