A hollow, fast-breaking bowl off the reef near Genteng on Simeulue, Turtles delivers a concave take-off that rewards surfers who can read a quick, punchy wall. It needs a solid swell to switch on and works best with offshore winds and the right tide to hold its shape. At head high and under, the wave is manageable for competent surfers, push it bigger and the speed and power demand sharp reflexes. The lineup stays genuinely uncrowded, which is the main draw given the wave's inconsistency. Bottom: coral reef. Season: May to October for peak Southern Hemisphere swell. Consistency: fickle, needs the right combo to fire. Pull out early, because the inside section closes out fast and the reef is unforgiving. Secure your valuables at your accommodation, as theft has been reported in the area.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Expect few surfers most days. The remoteness of Simeulue filters the crowds naturally, and this is not a marquee name on the Indo circuit. That said, the small lineup means even three or four surfers can feel like competition on a short wave. Respectful rotation goes a long way in this kind of setting.

Access & Facilities

Located next to farmland near Genteng. Facilities are minimal. Boat access may be required depending on tide and shore conditions. Bring your own water and food. Lock valuables in a safe or leave them with a trusted crew member, not in your room, as theft has been reported at nearby accommodation.

Nearby Alternatives

When Turtles is not working, the broader Simeulue and Banyak Islands chain has other reef setups that respond to similar swell windows. Explore the surrounding coastline by boat for less publicised peaks that fire in the same conditions.
