A mythical right-hand barrel on the island of Serangalu in the Banyak Islands, Lizard's Nest is one of the most demanding and rewarding waves in the Indonesian archipelago. It requires a SW swell tracking at 220° or more, N to NW offshore winds, and mid to high tide to link its three connecting tube sections into a single 10-second barrel. At 4-8ft it becomes a live-coral racetrack, shallow enough to demand complete commitment from every paddler. Expert surfers only. Bottom: submerged reef. Season: SW swell season, April through October. Consistency: medium, given the exacting swell direction and tide requirements. If the swell angle runs too far south, only the end section activates and the risk-reward tilts firmly toward the rocks, so know when to walk away. This is not a wave you show up to uninformed.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

The crowd factor is naturally low. The combination of remote access and technical demands means most boat charters that swing through the Banyaks will pass if conditions aren't exactly right. Expect a small crew of experienced surfers when it's on. Respect that dynamic and read the lineup before paddling straight to the peak.

Access & Facilities

Reachable only by liveaboard or chartered boat from Simeulue or Sinabang. No parking, no facilities, no bailout. Bring reef booties, a solid first-aid kit, and plenty of wax. Carry a step-up board for anything above 6ft, the sections move fast and the lip lands hard.

Nearby Alternatives

When Lizard's Nest isn't cooperating, Lolok Point nearby can produce left barrels for surfers with strong tube-riding credentials. Gunturs offers a more forgiving 100-150m right that can handle a wider swell range, while Dindos delivers consistent performance lefts when the Banyaks are pumping.
