A swell-hungry left on the southwestern tip of Pulau Bangkaru, Cobras detonates a double-barrel sequence when the swell lines up correctly, and remains a reliable go-to option even when conditions elsewhere are marginal. Pure S swell at 180 degrees is the sweet spot, up to a maximum of 210 degrees before the Bay of Plenty breaks switch on and split the crowd. Offshore E winds groom the face cleanly. Aim for low to incoming tide since high tide can shut the wave down entirely, and Cobras needs more water depth than most Banyak setups to function. The bottom is rocky submerged reef rather than live coral, which makes wipeouts significantly more consequential than a typical Indo reef. Experienced intermediates can handle smaller days, but overhead-plus surf produces a critical, fast-pitching tube that demands committed barrel riding to navigate. Rarely crowded, partly because visiting charter surfers self-select out when they see the intensity. Bottom: submerged reef. Season: April to October. Consistency: high. Absolutely avoid straightening out toward the end section where exposed rocks become knife-sharp.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Localism is not a factor here. Crowds are rare because access is remote and the wave filters itself. Charter surfers who see Cobras firing often decide it is above their skill level, keeping the lineup thin even on good days. That self-selection is honest and worth heeding.

Access & Facilities

No road access, no parking, no facilities. Cobras is reached exclusively by charter or camp boat operating in the Banyak Islands. The area is raw and remote, so carry sufficient drinking water, reef booties, and a full medical kit. Water quality is clean with no pollution concerns.

Nearby Alternatives

When Cobras is too heavy or the swell direction is off, Warrens is a right across the deep channel directly in front, though it is a stop-start wave of comparatively low quality. Gunturs, a 100 to 150m right deeper in the bay, offers a more forgiving option at smaller sizes while still delivering punch on bigger S swells.
