A freight-train right-hander over a fringing coral reef off Pulau Tapah, Tea Bags is one of the most intense barrels in the Simeulue archipelago. It needs a precise SW swell window, ideally 220-230 degrees, to produce a properly makeable tube, too far south and the wave becomes an unmakeable close-out. Offshore NW winds and mid-to-high tide are the key conditions. At its best the wave runs 100-200m at full freight-train speed over shallow coral, delivering a genuine expert-only challenge. Crowds are rarely an issue this far from the mainland, but the reef is unforgiving. Bottom: submerged reef. Season: SW swell season, roughly April through October. Consistency: medium. Arrive only if your tube-riding is solid and your board choice is dialled in.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

This is a remote boat-access wave in the outer Simeulue chain, so crowd pressure is minimal. The lineup self-selects by difficulty. That said, the small community of surfers visiting this region shares a tight circuit of breaks, and mutual respect in the water goes a long way on any given boat trip.

Access & Facilities

Boat access only, roughly 10km from Busung Bay. Negotiate a ride from Pantai Busung or the harbour behind One Pine. No parking, no facilities, no food or water on site. Bring everything you need for the session. The shallow reef means a leash, helmet, and reef boots are worth serious consideration.

Nearby Alternatives

When Tea Bags is too fast or the swell direction is off, Pulau Mincau has a fun, forgiving wave on its flank and is worth the same boat trip out. Back inside Busung Bay, Dylan's Left and the neighbouring right-hander offer more accessible options across a wider range of conditions.
