Nicknamed the Sumatran Pipeline, Way Jambu delivers hollow, ledgey left-hand barrels over a sharp reef about 30 minutes south of Krui, in Lampung's southwest coast swell corridor. S to SW swell from 180-225 degrees is the target window, with anything under 200 degrees running cleanly along the reef face rather than slamming it head-on at 225 SW. Offshore SE winds keep it groomed. Mid to high tide is the move: low tide turns the reef near-dry and the wipeouts turn consequential fast. Works from 3-5ft up to double-overhead-plus, and size alone won't prepare you for the air-drops. Experts only. Bottom: submerged reef. Season: April through September. Consistency: medium. Bring a helmet and a spare board because hold-downs on this reef are not optional.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

The lineup is rarely crowded, which reflects the wave's difficulty more than its obscurity. Surfers who make the trip south from Krui tend to be experienced travelers who read lineups. Give respect, read the shifting peak carefully, and don't paddle out if you can't comfortably handle fast hollow reef barrels.

Access & Facilities

About 30 minutes south of Krui by car, between Biha and Maran village. Free roadside parking, no facilities, and no surf-specific accommodation on this southern stretch. The nearest services are back in Krui. Note estuary and river outflow nearby: water quality can be affected after rain.

Nearby Alternatives

Ujung Bocor (Karang Nyimbor) to the north is the region's main draw and handles a wider swell range. For something more forgiving, Volcano's Left works in smaller swells at higher tides and is accessible to intermediate surfers. Jenny's, further north, offers fun rights in N to W winds when the southern stretch is blown out.
