Java's south coast throws up consistent swell at Sawarna, a mixed reef and beach setup in Lebak Regency, Banten, roughly 6-7 hours southwest of Jakarta. The spot works best on SW to S swells during the dry season, May through October, when morning offshore trade winds groom the surface before sea breezes fill in by midday. Low to mid tide is the sweet spot, with size averaging 2-4m and pushing larger during peak swell months. Intermediate surfers will find the most here, though the mix of beach and reef sections means different zones suit different abilities. Bottom: mixed reef and sand. Season: May-October. Consistency: moderate to good during dry season. Get in the water at first light to make the most of the glassy windows before the wind turns.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Far less foot traffic than Bali or Lombok. The drive from Jakarta is long enough to filter out day-trippers and keep the lineup manageable. Weekends can see more local and domestic surfers, but by southern Bali standards it remains quiet. Standard lineup respect applies.

Access & Facilities

Sawarna sits in a relatively remote stretch of Banten's south coast. The road from Jakarta is long and the last section can be rough, so a 4WD or well-maintained car is worth the consideration. Simple homestays are available nearby. Stock up on food and fuel before the final stretch. Rip currents along the beach sections are a genuine hazard, especially at higher tides.

Nearby Alternatives

Java's south coast has other exposed beach and reef options within range when Sawarna is flat or blown out. The broader Banten coastline catches similar swell windows, so exploring west or east can turn up uncrowded peaks if conditions align.
