Fast, groomed beachbreak walls peel left and right in the shadow of a volcanic rock monolith on Playa Naranjo, a 6km white-sand stretch deep inside Santa Rosa National Park in North Costa Rica. S, SW, and W swells are optimal, with NE offshore winds grooming the faces, mid-to-high tide is essential to prevent the sandbars from walling into closeouts. Shoulder-high to double-overhead is the sweet spot, and the wave suits everyone from beginners logging on mellow sections to shortboarders hunting punchier peaks. Crowds have grown significantly and 30-plus surfers can stack up on the prime peak near the rivermouth when it's firing. Bottom: sand. Season: December to February for offshores, March to September for swell. Consistency: high. Saltwater crocodiles patrol the rivermouths, so avoid paddling out near those channels and stay alert in low-visibility water.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

No true local crew, but expat surfers from Tamarindo have the place dialed and will be in the best spots. The lineup is described as welcoming, but 30-person peaks are common on good days. Dawn arrival or mid-week visits spread the load. Secondary peaks spread south along the beach and absorb overflow when the main peak is stacked.

Access & Facilities

Two options: a punishing 4WD drive through Santa Rosa National Park in dry season only, or a boat taxi from Playa del Coco. The park has no accommodation, camping is the only option. Park entry fees apply. Crocodiles are present near rivermouths so choose your paddle-out point carefully and keep entry and exit away from murky river channels.

Nearby Alternatives

Ollie's Point, reachable by the same boat taxi, offers a long right-hand point wave that fires in the same swell window and tends to be less crowded. If north Guanacaste is blown out or small, the Tamarindo area, roughly an hour south by road, has multiple breaks including Estero's consistent beachbreak peaks and Avellanas further down the coast.
