A long, semi-powerful A-frame reef break north of Punta Coyote, Playa Coyote delivers genuine lefts and rights on SW to NW swell with NE offshore winds keeping faces clean. The point handles size well, with bigger swells producing longer, more defined walls. Best size runs 3-8ft, though the beach section closes out frequently when swell jumps overhead. Intermediate to advanced surfers will find the most reward here, and the lineup stays near-empty given the remote access, river pollution near the mouth, and the honest deterrents of urchins, shallow rock at low tide, and confirmed tiger shark sightings. Bottom: reef and sand mix. Season: April through September. Consistency: medium. Come at higher tides to avoid the shallow rock shelf, and bring a board you can trust in punchy, fast conditions, because the point is no place to be underpowered or under-skilled when size fills in.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

This stretch rarely sees crowds. Remote access, no paved infrastructure, and the combination of sharks, urchins, and rocky paddle-out keep casual surfers away. Locals at the Tangas restaurant area are friendly. No known localism issues, but show basic respect in what is effectively someone's backyard.

Access & Facilities

Reach the point via 4WD on sandy tracks. Free parking on the beach is the norm. Basic camping and cabinas are available in Coyote village. No surf shops or rentals nearby, so arrive self-sufficient. The rivermouth carries pollution on outgoing tides, especially after rain. Watch for stingrays in shallow water.

Nearby Alternatives

Playa San Miguel and Playa Bejuco to the north offer similar empty SW-facing beachbreak with long, stretch-your-legs peak-hunting. Camaronal, further north, picks up any trace of S swell on its river-fed sandbars and is worth checking when Coyote goes sectiony.
