A skate-park beachbreak on the Nicoya Peninsula, Guiones delivers fast walls, turn sections, and the occasional barrel across a wide stretch of black-sand beach south of Nosara town. S and SW swells are the engine here, with E winds grooming the faces. It fires from head-high to a couple of feet overhead and handles the full tide range, though mid-tide tends to clean up the shape. The crowd is real but the beach is long enough that a short walk or paddle finds you room. Bottom: sand. Season: year-round, biggest May through August. Consistency: reliable. Bring reef-safe sunscreen and hydrate aggressively in the midday heat, because sunstroke is a genuine hazard on a long session here.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Weekdays can feel nearly empty, weekends draw a few more surfers. The vibe is welcoming and the local crew is relaxed, though they will pick off the best peaks on the strongest days. Spread out, give the established locals their priority waves, and the experience stays easy. Beginners and intermediates congregate on the more obvious peaks, so moving 100m down the beach often opens up quality waves.

Access & Facilities

Guiones sits roughly a mile south of Nosara center. Multiple access paths lead from town directly to the beach. No long hike required. Parking is available near several hotels and restaurants along the access road. Water, food, and rental boards are all close at hand in town. Water quality is generally clean but development pressure and inadequate sewage infrastructure have created occasional issues, so check recent reports before extended sessions.

Nearby Alternatives

When Guiones goes flat or closes out, the Nosara rivermouth at the north end of the beach sometimes produces better-shaped peaks on the same swell. Ostional, a short drive north, offers a reef option that handles larger S swells with more shape when beachbreak conditions deteriorate.
