Avellanas punches above its size on Costa Rica's north Pacific coast, about 30 minutes south of Langosta, where a stretch of beach breaks, rocky reefs, and a rivermouth combine to catch more swell than the more famous Tamarindo just up the road. S, SW, and W swells are the engine here, with offshore E winds grooming conditions from chest-high to double-overhead. Mid-to-high tide favors the beach breaks while the rivermouth lights up at low. Multiple peaks keep the lineup spread thin, and the crowd skews toward expats and visiting surfers rather than heavy locals. Bottom: sand with a rock shelf at the south end. Season: March through August. Consistency: reliable when nearby breaks go flat. Shallow rocks lurk in spots, so a little local knowledge goes a long way before committing to the south reef section on bigger tides.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

The lineup is consistently mellow. Spread across multiple peaks, the crowd rarely stacks up even on solid days. Locals are few and the vibe skews welcoming, with more expats and traveling surfers than territorial regulars. Standard respect protocols apply: read the lineup, share peaks, and don't snake. Dawn patrol in high season avoids the midday tourist rush from nearby Tamarindo.

Access & Facilities

A dirt road leads to an unguarded lot handling around 50 vehicles, with overflow parking further back. Cabinas Las Olas runs private wooden walkways through the mangroves directly to the beach. Water quality is clean. Bring sun protection for the exposed beach and footwear for rocky entry points at the south end.

Nearby Alternatives

When Avellanas is maxed out or onshore, Langosta to the north offers a similar mixed setup and tends to share the same swell window. Tamarindo, slightly smaller in swell exposure, is worth checking when Avellanas closes out, especially for longboarders or beginners looking for gentler conditions.
