A powerful right-hand reef break pitching hard off a cluster of exposed rocks on a headland about 1km south of Jaco, Roca Loca is one of the more serious waves on Costa Rica's central Pacific coast. SW to W swell from 5ft up is required to get it going, with the wave holding through to 12ft-plus on the biggest swells. NE offshore winds keep it clean, and low to mid tide is the optimal window before the rock clusters turn the inside into an obstacle course. The entry and exit demand precision: a tiny keyhole is the only safe paddle route, so scout it carefully before committing. Bottom is submerged reef with exposed rock at low water. Season runs May through October, aligning with the Southern Hemisphere swell season. Medium consistency overall, but when the swell lines up it gets busy fast, drawing the local expert crew out of Jaco.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Weekdays can be surprisingly quiet given how demanding the access is. When the swell lines up, the expert local crew from Jaco arrives quickly and the lineup tightens up. Know where you fit in the pecking order before paddling out. Beginners and intermediates have no business here.

Access & Facilities

No facilities on site. Jaco is 1km north and has everything: hotels, surf shops, restaurants, bars. Park free on the headland. The keyhole entry is small and easy to miss from the water, identify it from land first. River and estuary drainage nearby affects water quality after heavy rain.

Nearby Alternatives

Playa Hermosa, just south of Jaco, offers a long black sand beachbreak with serious power across multiple peaks when Roca Loca is too maxed or too small. Playa Escondida has reef peaks accessible by boat. On a big S-SW swell, Boca Barranca to the north produces one of the longest left walls in the region.
