A punishing reef break on Costa Rica's North Pacific coast, Marbella delivers fast, powerful waves that demand respect and commitment on every set. It picks up NW to SW groundswell and works best at mid to high tide, when the reef produces short, aggressive walls that can stretch to 50-150m on a solid day. This is not a wave for intermediates looking to push their limits, the bottom is unforgiving rock and reef, and the intensity earns it a locals-only reputation by default. Bottom: reef. Season: Dec-Mar for NW swell, May-Oct for SW. Consistency: low to moderate. Arrive at dawn on a rising mid tide if you want a clean paddle-out and uncrowded sets, this stretch of coastline sees very little traffic even on weekends, which is both a draw and a warning: help is not close if something goes wrong.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Lineups here are empty on weekdays and weekends alike. This isn't a secret, the road access keeps casual traffic away. That said, the wave itself enforces a natural filter: if you can't handle fast, powerful reef, you shouldn't be in the water. Respect the spot and the handful of serious surfers who know it.

Access & Facilities

Marbella sits past Junquillal on the North Guanacaste coast. Stay on the road past the Junquillal turnoff and you'll find it. No facilities, no lifeguards, no easy exit if the surf gets big. Bring your own water, a first aid kit, and leash insurance. The nearest services are back toward the main coastal road.

Nearby Alternatives

Junquillal itself offers a more forgiving beach break when Marbella is too heavy or the tide is wrong. Further south, Tamarindo and Avellanas have consistent beach and reef options across a wider skill range.
