A rivermouth beachbreak on Costa Rica's central Pacific coast, Tivives delivers punchy beach peaks alongside a wrapping left point when strong S swell fills in. Optimal conditions call for S to SW swell in the 2-10ft range, with NE offshore winds keeping faces clean. Mid to high tide is best for the beach peaks, while the Mini Valor left in front of the cliffs works better on lower tides, letting you walk the beach back to the peak rather than paddling against the current. Intermediate surfers will find the most to work with here, particularly on the rivermouth rights that resist closing out when the rest of the beach goes square. Crowds are occasional rather than constant. Bottom: sand/beachbreak. Season: May-November. Consistency: medium. Be aware this is a legitimate croc and shark zone near the rivermouth and Valor reefs, so stay alert and keep sessions away from the estuary mouth.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Crowds show up occasionally, not consistently, and localism is not flagged as a concern here. The spread-out nature of the beachbreak means pressure rarely concentrates, though the better rivermouth peaks can draw more attention on solid swells.

Access & Facilities

Parking is free but there are no facilities on site, so bring water, food, and sunscreen. The estuary and rivermouth character of this spot creates genuine wildlife hazards: crocodiles and sharks have been reported in the area, particularly near the Valor reefs and the river channel. Do not surf close to the estuary mouth, especially at dawn or dusk.

Nearby Alternatives

When Tivives is not cooperating, Puerto Caldera to the north offers a faster ripable left off a rivermouth bar on bigger swells. Jaco, a short drive south, is Costa Rica's main surf hub with consistent beach peaks, full amenities, and access to Playa Hermosa's powerful black-sand shorebreak for those looking for more punch.
