A right-hand reef break that throws some of the most consistent barrels on Costa Rica's Nicoya Peninsula, Playa Negra sits roughly 25 minutes south of Tamarindo along the Guanacaste coast. It needs SW to NW swell to fire, with NE offshores keeping the faces clean. Mid tide is the sweet spot for walling, rippable sections that hook into proper tubes as the water drops, low tide drains fast and the inside gets shallow over the reef, demanding speed and precise positioning. The wave starts working around 3-4ft and handles 15ft plus, though the upper range is expert-only territory. A consistent high-quality reef like this draws a crowd, especially on weekends. Bottom: submerged reef. Season: year-round with peak swell windows in dry season. Consistency: high. Bring a board with enough volume to generate speed through the barrel sections, and check the tide chart before paddling out.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

The lineup gets crowded, particularly on weekends. The wave quality draws both travelling surfers from Tamarindo and regulars who know the reef well. Come with good energy. Dawn patrol sessions during the week offer the best chance at scoring with fewer bodies in the water. Attitude matters here.

Access & Facilities

From Tamarindo, follow signs toward Hotel Playa Negra through Avellanas. The drive is approximately 25 minutes. Parking is available at Hotel Playa Negra, which has a restaurant on-site. There are minimal public facilities otherwise. Keep valuables out of your vehicle, car break-ins have been reported in the area.

Nearby Alternatives

Avellanas, a short drive north, has six named breaks along a 2km stretch including the fun reef known as Little Hawaii. Playa Guiones to the south offers punchier beach peaks and a reef-sand mix that handles more size. Tamarindo's Estero is a reliable backup when Negra is blown out or maxed.
