A slow, wrapping left-hand point in the Nicoya Gulf near Malpais, Punta Barigona coils around a giant boulder and can run up to 100m when a solid S or SW swell fills in. The wave needs real swell energy to fire, and even then it sits on the fatter, more drawn-out end of the spectrum rather than throwing hard barrels. Mid to high tide keeps you off the exposed reef and tidepools at the takeoff zone. Intermediate surfers can enjoy the long walls, advanced riders may find it too slow unless size is up. Bottom: mixed reef and rock point. Season: April through September, with November capable of surprise swells. Consistency: low to moderate, swell-dependent. Pack a longboard or a fun shape if you want to make the most of what Barigona offers.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Access keeps the lineup quiet. Barigona rarely draws a crowd, and the vibe in the water reflects that. The flip side of the remoteness is that there is no safety net if conditions spike, come prepared and self-sufficient. Mar Azul on one side and Bahia Barigona on the other give you two pockets to choose from depending on swell angle.

Access & Facilities

Access runs via the Mar Azul road from the Malpais area. The route is rough and conditions-dependent, so a high-clearance vehicle is worth having. Facilities are minimal in the immediate area, stock up on water and food in Malpais or Santa Teresa before heading out. Low tide exposes sharp tidepools between you and the water, so time your paddle-out accordingly.

Nearby Alternatives

When Barigona is too small or the angle is wrong, Santa Teresa and Playa Carmen to the north handle a broader swell window and offer more consistent beach and point options across all tides. Mal Pais itself has reef sections that can wake up on smaller days.
