A steep, shifty beachbreak about a mile south of Tamarindo, Playa Langosta punches above its weight when Southern Hemisphere swell fills in from March through September. The wide rivermouth peak delivers fast lefts and rights over a sand-and-rock bottom, capable of throwing proper barrels at lower tides. SW to W swell at head-high to double-overhead is the sweet spot, with E or NE winds keeping faces clean. Intermediate to advanced surfers will get the most out of it, and while the crowd is moderate by Costa Rica standards, expect talent in the water when it's on. Bottom: Sand and rock. Season: Year-round, best March-September. Consistency: High. Access is tight: a ten-spot public lot, with condo developments and the Barcelo resort cutting off most other entry points, so take a taxi if you're not based in Langosta.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

The lineup runs moderate to crowded when conditions are good. The local vibe is welcoming compared to Tamarindo proper, but expect plenty of skilled surfers and a competitive atmosphere when a quality swell hits. Dawn patrol sessions tend to be less compressed. Respect the peak rotation and the talent level in the water.

Access & Facilities

No facilities on the beach. The ten-spot free public lot fills fast, and resort infrastructure blocks most other road access. Taxi from Tamarindo town is the practical option for visitors. Watch for shallow rocks in sections of the break, especially at low tide.

Nearby Alternatives

When Langosta is blown out or flat, Tamarindo's Estero rivermouth a mile north offers consistent, fast peaks of its own. Avellanas, roughly 20km south, runs six named breaks along a 2km stretch including the well-regarded Little Hawaii section, worth the drive when a solid SW swell is running.
