A wide, sandy beach break on Costa Rica's Central Pacific coast, Playa Hermosa sits about 2-3km south of Jacó and catches S, SW, and SSW swells consistently from March through October. Mid-to-high tide produces the cleaner peaks, while lower tide sections can hold you inside longer than expected. Multiple A-frame peaks spread across the beach mean you can rotate away from the busier banks, and the generally welcoming local vibe keeps the atmosphere relaxed even on weekends when crowds build. Bottom: sand. Season: March to October. Consistency: reliable during Pacific swell season. Dawn patrol is the call here as afternoon onshores typically chop it up by midday. Note that there are two Playa Hermosas in Costa Rica, this one is in the Central Pacific, not the North Pacific spot, and the difference matters when you're planning your approach.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Weekdays see light to moderate crowds across a long stretch of beach. Weekends get busy, particularly at the better-shaped peaks. The local vibe is genuinely welcoming. Spread across the available peaks rather than stacking up at one bank, there's room for everyone when the swell is running and people use the space.

Access & Facilities

Beachfront parking makes this one of the easier accesses on the Central Pacific coast. From Jacó it's roughly 2-3km south, bikes, scooters, and taxis are all common options since the road has no sidewalk. Surf schools operate here regularly, so rentals and lessons are easy to find. Water quality is fair.

Nearby Alternatives

When swell builds beyond 6-8ft and the beach gets messy, the local reefs and points in the area handle size better. The Tree and Tulin, both near Playa Hermosa, work better at lower tides and are worth checking when the main beach closes out.
