A low-key a-frame peak on Costa Rica's North Pacific coast, Playa Caletas offers quick reef and beach breaks near a rivermouth that rewards surfers willing to time conditions carefully. SW to NW swell in the 2-5ft range hits best at mid to high tide, when the peaks stand up cleanly before the estuary influence muddies the water. A light NE offshore wind is the green flag. Intermediate surfers will find manageable walls here, but advanced riders who can read shifting peaks and handle occasional hollow sections will get the most from it. Bottom: mixed reef and sand. Season: April through September. Consistency: medium. Avoid surfing after heavy rain when the rivermouth flushes debris and bacteria into the lineup, which is a legitimate water quality concern at this spot.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Caletas draws light crowds by Costa Rican standards. The remoteness filters out the surf school traffic that clogs spots further south, and the mixed-quality lineup doesn't attract competitive packs. Early mornings during peak season are the quietest windows.

Access & Facilities

Free parking is available and camping is on-site, making this viable for multi-day trips without a nearby town base. Water and food options are limited, so pack accordingly. The estuary and rivermouth create low-level pollution risk year-round, elevated after rain. No major hazards reported, but scan the reef at low tide before paddling out.

Nearby Alternatives

When Caletas is flat or blown out, Playa Coyote and Playa San Miguel stretch long enough to find empty peaks in similar conditions. On a major SW swell, the long lefts at Punta Barigona are worth the detour for more experienced surfers seeking a proper wall.
