One of the more enjoyable right-hand points in Central America, Ollie's Point peels long and forgiving off a rock-and-sand rivermouth in remote North Costa Rica, accessible only by boat from Playas del Coco or Playa Ocotal. It needs a solid SW swell to switch on, typically head-high to double overhead, and performs best at low to mid tide with NE offshores funneling through the jungle above the headland. The point suits a wide range of surfers when small, but when a big south swell gets out, the crowd follows, and with only one main takeoff zone the lineup compresses fast. Bottom: rocks and sand. Season: April to October. Consistency: swell window is narrow, SW required, misses NW groundswell cycles entirely. Book an overnight boat trip to sidestep the afternoon tour-boat rush and get the wave to yourself at dawn.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

The local vibe is welcoming and mellow, but remoteness provides no immunity from crowds. Tour boats arrive in numbers when a significant south swell is forecast. There is one peak and one main takeoff zone, so even moderate numbers create a competitive situation. Afternoon hours are consistently the busiest. Dawn or overnight trips deliver a dramatically different experience.

Access & Facilities

No road access exists. Rent a boat from Playas del Coco or Playa Ocotal, roughly 270km from San Jose. Boat permits are required for access. Camping on the point is illegal. Medical assistance is genuinely far away, so carry a solid first aid kit and know your plan if something goes wrong.

Nearby Alternatives

Witches Rock sits close by and picks up more swell on most swells, making it the go-to when Ollie's is too small. Playa Hermosa and Tamarindo are further south and offer more consistent surf when the SW window is not optimal for the point.
