Consistent beachbreak peaks spread across two miles of Costa Rica's Guanacaste Coast, making Nosara one of the more reliable surf destinations on the Nicoya Peninsula. It picks up S, SW, and NW swells, works best at mid to incoming tide, and handles shoulder-high through double-overhead conditions. East winds keep faces clean for most of the dry season. Beginners, intermediates, and advanced surfers all share the lineup, though the spread of peaks helps absorb the crowds. Bottom: sand. Season: March through August. Consistency: high during swell season. One honest warning before you paddle out: crocodiles are a documented hazard near the Nosara rivermouth, so ask local fishermen about recent activity before entering the water anywhere near that section of beach.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Multiple surf camps have set up here in recent years, which means consistent beginner traffic in the water. Weekday and weekend crowds are both rated heavy. The local vibe is welcoming and the peaks spread out, but the most consistent sections can see two dozen surfers. Dawn patrol on weekdays is your best window for a less competitive lineup.

Access & Facilities

Four hours by road from San Jose. Most surfers park roadside, the first 50 meters from the beach are kept undeveloped. Rentals, lessons, and camps are easy to find in the village. Water quality is clean. Keep valuables out of your car at the beach unless a guard is present.

Nearby Alternatives

When the beach is overcrowded or onshore, nearby point and reefbreaks on the Nicoya Peninsula handle size with better shape at lower tides. For the trip of a lifetime, a boat charter to Witches Rock or Ollie's Point to the north is around an hour from the area and delivers a serious step up in wave quality.
