A current-heavy rivermouth left on Chile's southern coast, Tirua delivers fast, hollow walls when the swell lines up but demands respect from anyone paddling out. S to W swells in the 5-8ft range are the sweet spot, with S winds keeping it offshore and all tides workable. Strong currents from the Rio Tirua constantly reshape the sandbank and can drag even experienced surfers down the beach, so intermediate surfers should think twice before committing. Bottom: beach/rivermouth. Season: March to October. Consistency: medium. Bring a leash you trust and a board with some volume for the paddle battle.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Tirua is consistently empty, even on weekends. The difficult access, lack of facilities, and current-heavy paddle keep the lineup uncrowded. There is no notable localism, but the wave commands its own form of respect. Do not let an empty lineup lower your guard on the current.

Access & Facilities

No parking area and no facilities on site. A short walk from town (5-15 minutes) gets you to the beach. Private or restricted access may apply in places, and 4x4 is the recommended transport for the approach. Water quality carries estuary pollution risk from the river, so avoid surfing after heavy rainfall.

Nearby Alternatives

Punta Quidico, roughly 120km south, offers long rivermouth lefts below a small lighthouse when Tirua is too messy. Buchupureo, further north, is the standout break in the region with La Boca grooming the sand into long, consistent lefts on a cleaner rivermouth setup.
