A long-walling left point on Chile's Bío Bío coastline, La Rinconada delivers powerful, rumbling walls with generous cutback shoulders rather than hollow barrels. S to W swells in the 5-10ft range are the sweet spot, with offshore SE winds cleaning up the face. The wave works at all tides, which adds to its reliability on a coast that sees consistent Southern Ocean groundswell from April through October. Intermediate surfers will find plenty of room to work the wall, though summer months pull in crowds of learners and tourists drawn by the accessible seafood and black sand beach nearby. Bottom: point over rock and sand. Season: autumn through spring. Consistency: high. Arrive early on weekend mornings to secure a position before the lineup fills, and factor in the unpaved road south of Cobquecura through Taucu, which requires time and a suitable vehicle.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Summer draws learners and coastal tourists, and weekend sessions can turn genuinely crowded. The rest of the year the lineup thins out considerably. The small fishing community at Taucu sets the tone: be respectful, buy seafood from the pangas on the beach, and don't act entitled. Loud groups and aggressive drops will not go unnoticed in a tight-knit coastal village.

Access & Facilities

Head south from Cobquecura through the town of Taucu, then continue to the point. Road conditions can be rough, so a high-clearance vehicle is worth considering. No formal parking area or facilities exist at the break. Water quality raises no current concerns. Bring your own food and water, though local fishermen sell fresh seafood from the beach.

Nearby Alternatives

Buchupureo, a short distance north, is the region's standout break with La Boca producing longer, faster walls when sand banks align. Tregualemu, further south, handles swells up to 15ft over rock and sand and is worth the detour when size is up.
