A sand-dependent rivermouth break on the southern edge of Cobquecura commune, Praia Mela delivers rides of 100-200m when the sandbars cooperate. SW to W swells in the 3-8ft range push the best form here, with SE offshore winds grooming the surface and all tides playable. Intermediate surfers will find the wave approachable, and crowds are rarely an issue at this quiet fishing beach. Bottom: sand (rivermouth). Season: consistent in southern hemisphere swell season. Consistency: medium. Be aware that a pulp mill is under construction on the nearby Rio Itata, which may eventually affect water quality at this otherwise clean stretch of coast.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

This is a popular local fishing beach and the vibe reflects that: relaxed, family-oriented, rarely competitive in the lineup. Crowds are minimal. Treat the beach and the community with respect, particularly given the estuarine environment and the quiet residential character of this stretch of Cobquecura.

Access & Facilities

No dedicated parking and no facilities on site. The spot marks the southern boundary of the Cobquecura commune. Come self-sufficient: bring water, food, and sun protection. The estuarine setting means soft sand and longer walks are possible depending on where you access the beach.

Nearby Alternatives

When Praia Mela's bars aren't cooperating, Buchupureo's La Boca rivermouth is the standout in the region, offering longer and more consistently groomed walls. Rinconada offers rumbling long walls on a similar setup if you need more length. Playa Monte del Zorro is worth checking for beachbreak peaks and a protected left in smaller swells.
