A rivermouth left that draws Mundaka comparisons, Buchupureo's La Boca shapes sand into long, hollow walls on the southern Chilean coast, roughly 50 minutes south of Curanipe by car. SW to NW swells of 3-12ft feed the break, with S winds providing natural protection and offshore or cross-shore NW winds cleaning up the face. Mid to higher tides generally improve the sand-bottom sections, though locals flag low tide as the preferred window for the deepest tubes. Two to three distinct sections offer barrel opportunities with ride times reportedly reaching double-digit seconds on good days, making it a serious wave for experienced surfers only. Bottom: sand over rivermouth bar. Season: April to October. Consistency: good during southern hemisphere winter swells. Arrive at dawn on weekdays to find a manageable lineup, weekends draw crowds that tighten the takeoff zone significantly.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Weekdays are manageable with a small crew, but weekends and solid swells pull crowds. The Mundaka-comparison reputation has spread this wave beyond the local surf community. Respect the lineup, read the pecking order, and do not paddle around people on a wave this long. Dawn sessions midweek are your best bet for space.

Access & Facilities

Buchupureo is a small agricultural and fishing town surrounded by forest and farmland. Drive south from Curanipe on the coastal road, roughly 50 minutes. Accommodation is limited, budget options exist in the nearby hamlet of Pullay, reportedly offering meals and a beachfront setup at reasonable rates. No major surf shops in town, stock up on wax and supplies before leaving Curanipe or further north.

Nearby Alternatives

When Buchupureo is maxed out or the sand bar is off, Curanipe to the north offers more sheltered beach breaks in smaller swells. Punta de Lobos near Pichilemu, several hours north, is the region's other benchmark left and worth the drive if you are traveling the Chilean coast.
