One of the best rights in Northern Chile, Portofino delivers consistent power from a tight rock-and-sand bottom just off a small village shoreline. NW swells feed a wave that throws tubing sections, opens up rippable overhead walls, and connects through to air sections when the size and banks align. Mid-tide outgoing is the window, with E winds keeping it clean. Best at waist-high to slightly overhead, though shoulder burn picks up when it's pumping. Intermediate surfers are the sweet spot here: advanced enough to handle a close-to-shore reef break, but the crowd stays light enough that you won't be fighting for sets. Bottom: rocks and sand. Season: February to October. Consistency: reliable through the swell season. The urchin-covered rock bottom is the main hazard, so booties are a smart call even on warm days.
Lineup vibe is notably relaxed, with a welcoming local crew and very light crowds on most days. The mellow atmosphere makes it easy for traveling surfers to slot in respectfully. Standard etiquette applies: read the pecking order, don't snake, and a bit of patience goes a long way.
Direct access from the road, with parking right in front of the break. Entry and exit over urchin-covered rock demands attention, booties or careful footwork on the reef. Water quality is clean.
Northern Chile has a stretch of right-hand reef breaks and beach peaks in both directions along the coast. When Portofino is flat or the angle is wrong, scout nearby reefs that pick up similar NW swell windows.
