A ledgy, consequence-heavy point break on the outskirts of Arica, El Toro Viejo throws fast, powerful waves directly onto exposed rock shelving. SW to NW swells in the 4-8ft range bring the wave to life, and a light SE offshore wind keeps faces clean. This is strictly experienced-surfer territory: the take-off is abrupt, sections come fast, and a wipeout puts you on the rocks. Crowds are sparse most days and minimal on weekdays, but the hazard level keeps it self-selecting. Bottom: rock/point. Season: austral autumn through spring, May to October. Consistency: low to moderate. Wear a helmet and impact vest, and scope the entry and exit carefully before paddling out.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Lineup pressure is low. Weekdays see near-empty water, and weekends bring only a handful of surfers. The spot filters itself naturally: the rock shelf and consequence of a wipeout deter most surfers, so those who paddle out tend to know what they are doing. Read the room and respect those who surf here regularly.

Access & Facilities

Arica is a compact city with standard amenities, food, and board repair available. The break sits on rocky coastline outside town. Study the rocks at low tide before committing to a session. There is no channel to speak of, and a broken leash here is a serious situation. Bring a helmet, an impact vest, and booties for the rock shelf.

Nearby Alternatives

El Gringo, Arica's most exposed beach break, offers a more forgiving option when El Toro Viejo is too raw or too small. The main beach at Chinchorro provides beginner-friendly reform waves on smaller swells for those wanting mellow water time nearby.
