A deep-water bombora off Iquique's Cavancha peninsula, La Bestia is one of South America's most consequential big-wave discoveries: a massive, hollow slab that draws direct comparisons to Teahupoo. It needs a solid S to SW swell, 8ft minimum to wake up, and holds well past 20ft before becoming tow-only territory. Offshore E winds keep it clean, best tide is low, when the reef really bares its teeth. This wave is strictly for experienced big-wave surfers with rescue support on standby. Paddle sessions exist on smaller days, but once it clears 15ft, jet skis are not optional. Bottom: deep-water rock reef, 30-45ft down. Season: May through September. Consistency: rare, a handful of sessions per winter at best. Access requires a long paddle or boat support from the Punta Cavancha waterfront, and two-wave hold-downs are a documented part of the experience here, not an outlier scenario.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

The lineup is effectively self-regulating: only a handful of big-wave chargers are out on any given day. Local crew from Iquique are welcoming and supportive. There is no territorial pressure here because the wave itself handles all filtering. Respect the pecking order, come equipped, and have your own rescue plan.

Access & Facilities

The wave sits offshore from the Cavancha peninsula, visible from the upper floors of the hotels and apartment blocks along Punta Cavancha. There is no parking at the break itself. Access is by long paddle, boat, or jet ski. Nearest surf facilities are in Iquique town. Water is clean. The primary hazard is drowning, come with a safety crew or do not paddle out.

Nearby Alternatives

When La Bestia is flat or too big to paddle, Iquique's bay offers several other options. Colegio, directly in front of the main high school, is the city's go-to performance wave. Intendencia is a heavy, challenging left that demands near-perfect conditions but rewards experienced surfers on its day.
