A sand-covered reef at the northern tip of the Alacrán Peninsula in Arica, El Brazo is a short, hollow A-frame that demands a large wrapping swell to fire. The peninsula itself was once an island before port construction in the 1960s connected it to the mainland, which shapes how swell refracts around the elbow jetty. Optimal conditions require S to NW swell and SW offshore winds, with the wave working best in the 6-10ft range during the austral winter months of May through September. The rights stay open longer than the lefts, giving intermediate-to-advanced surfers a better chance of threading a section, though the short ride length means you need to be efficient from the first stroke. Bottom: sand-covered reef. Season: May to September. Consistency: low, and the window of conditions needed to activate this spot is narrow enough that you may wait days for it to line up properly. Commercial port activity and no facilities mean you should arrive self-sufficient with water and a spare leash.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Crowds are rarely an issue here given the low consistency and demanding conditions. On the uncommon days when it does fire, expect a small crew of experienced local surfers who know the window well. Respect the lineup and read the rotation.

Access & Facilities

Head to the former Isla Alacrán in Arica and make your way to the northern tip near the elbow jetty. No parking or facilities are available on site, so plan accordingly. The wider Arica break zone includes well-known alternatives close by.

Nearby Alternatives

When El Brazo is flat, Arica offers a dense cluster of options. La Isla is one of the area's most respected waves, particularly on summer northerly swells, while El Gringo, sometimes called the Chilean Pipeline, delivers another hollow A-frame experience nearby. For surfers willing to paddle further, El Buey is a big-wave arena roughly 700m offshore at Playa El Laucho.
