A wide, exposed beachbreak on the northern Chilean coast near Arica, Arenillas Negras is worth knowing mostly for its beginner-friendly inside sections rather than anything headline-worthy. It needs S to NW swell in the 3-6ft range to produce rideable waves, and only really behaves at mid tide when the energy organizes into short slides along the sand. NE offshores clean it up, but rocks scattered through the lineup mean even learners should stay alert. Crowd pressure is minimal here, since the more advanced surfers are pulled south toward the heavy slabs and big-wave spots the region is better known for. Bottom: sand with rock hazards. Season: year-round with S to SW swell, autumn and winter most consistent. Consistency: medium. Be aware that commercial pollution from a nearby fish processing facility affects water quality, so check conditions after rain or industrial discharge events before paddling out.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

The lineup is rarely crowded. More experienced surfers migrate to the regional heavies nearby, leaving this stretch relatively empty. Low localism pressure, but the rock scatter means even a quiet lineup demands awareness. Dawn sessions tend to be glassy and the least populated.

Access & Facilities

No dedicated parking and no facilities on-site. The commercial zone nearby includes a fish processing factory, and pollution is a documented concern. Pack your own water and food. Rocks in the water are the primary hazard. Check pollution conditions before entering.

Nearby Alternatives

Just south, El Rancio is a heavy righthand slab delivering below-sea-level barrels in SW-W swells up to 12ft, strictly for experienced bodyboarders and surfers. La Capilla, 4km south of town, is another big-wave option when size and conditions align. When Arenillas Negras is too small or messy, La Isla is one of the most highly regarded breaks in the Arica area, especially on summer northerly swell days.
