A fast, hollow right-hand beachbreak in Arica, northern Chile, La Brava sits directly in front of the old train station and punches well above its size when the swell lines up. It needs S to NW swell in the 3-8ft range, northeast offshores, and runs at all tide stages. The wave is short but vertical, throwing a full tube section before closing out quickly, with rocks and reef sitting uncomfortably close on the north side of the bay. Intermediates can sample the sandier shorebreak sections on smaller days, but the main peak is a bodyboarder and experienced shortboarder wave due to the proximity of the reef hazards. Bottom: mixed sand and rock. Season: May through September. Consistency: medium. Bring a board you're comfortable throwing into fast, steep sections and expect a short ride that demands commitment from the first stroke.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

The spot is lightly surfed, partly because the reef proximity filters out all but committed surfers. Weekend crowds remain sparse. No significant localism reported, but the low numbers in the water reflect the wave's technical demands more than a welcoming lineup. Give right of way to bodyboarders who know the peak well.

Access & Facilities

Access is immediate from the old train station beachfront, easy to find with no walk required. There is no parking infrastructure and no facilities on site. The area carries some commercial pollution, so check conditions after heavy rain. Nearby Arica town has everything you need for food, water, and gear.

Nearby Alternatives

Arenillas Negras, just south along the same stretch, offers a wider exposed beachbreak with similar rights but slightly more room to work with. La Isla is the area's most respected break and handles northerly summer swell well. For those chasing serious size, La Capilla is 4km south of town and operates on a different level entirely.
