A barrelling left-hand point on Chile's Norte Chico coast, La Vedette bends S-SW groundswell into punchy, hollow walls along a rocky shoreline. It faces NW, which means solid south swells wrap cleanly into the bay and stand up with real power. Offshore winds come from the SE, a reliable pattern in this stretch of Chile. The wave works across all tides, with optimum size in the 2-8ft range, and can produce long rides of 200-500m when conditions align. Intermediate to advanced surfers will find it rewarding, crowds are rare, which is a genuine plus for a wave of this quality. Bottom: rock and point. Season: southern hemisphere autumn through winter, April to September. Consistency: medium. When the swell is too small to wrap properly, the long beach break to the north is worth checking as an alternative.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

This stretch of Northern Chile sees few visiting surfers, and the lineup at La Vedette reflects that. Crowds are rarely an issue. The remoteness keeps the vibe relaxed, but standard respect applies: read the rotation, don't snake sets, and acknowledge locals who know this wave far better than you do.

Access & Facilities

There is no parking area and no facilities at the break. Come self-sufficient with water, food, and any gear you need. The rocky inside demands careful entry and exit, so scout the channel before paddling out. Reef booties are worth considering given the rock hazard on the inside section.

Nearby Alternatives

When La Vedette is too small, the long beach break immediately to the north picks up more swell and offers beach peaks across skill levels. Further south, the Totoralillo peninsula holds three pointbreaks, including the long righthand sections of El Muro, worth exploring when S-SW swells are running.
