A northwest-facing beachbreak on Chile's northern coast, Las Tacas sits inside a sheltered bay backed by a large resort complex. It picks up SW to NW swells and stays cleanest in SE offshore winds, working across all tides in the 1-5ft range. The wave mostly closes out across the sandbars, limiting ride length to under 50m, but on better days it produces short, punchy peaks suited to learners and those wanting a casual session. Crowds are rarely an issue here, though the resort setting means the lineup skews toward guests rather than dedicated surfers. Bottom: sand. Season: most consistent in austral autumn and winter when S-SW swells pulse up the coast. Consistency: medium. The closeout tendency is the main frustration, so if conditions are maxing out, nearby El Muro on the south side of the peninsula offers a proper righthand point as a fallback option worth checking.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Localism is essentially non-existent here. The lineup is usually empty or shared with resort guests on beginner boards. No pressure, no aggression. Dawn patrol is unnecessary unless you are chasing the calmest winds before the afternoon sea breeze builds.

Access & Facilities

Access is through the resort area. No dedicated surf parking or facilities are listed, so come self-sufficient with water and snacks. The resort itself may have amenities for guests. No water quality concerns are noted, and hazards are minimal given the sandy bottom.

Nearby Alternatives

When Las Tacas closes out or goes flat, El Muro on the south side of the peninsula is the first call, with a long righthand point broken into several sections. Further along, the surf village of Totoralillo has a small rock-and-sand peninsula holding three pointbreaks worth exploring.
