One of the most brutally honest slabs on the Chilean coast, Intendencia is a heavy left that detonates over a submerged reef just north of Playa Cavancha in Iquique. It demands a full S to SW swell, 3ft to 12ft, with easterly offshores and a high tide to keep the reef covered enough to make the drop survivable. Below full tide, the wave goes square and beyond vertical, turning the takeoff into something close to unmakeable for anyone but the most committed bodyboarders and expert stand-ups. The crowd is small by necessity: only the local crew who know this wave intimately show up when it's on. Bottom: submerged reef. Season: autumn and winter swells. Consistency: medium. The wave consistently looks smaller from the road than it actually is, so add at least a foot to your visual read before paddling out.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Weekend crowds rarely exceed a handful of surfers, and most casual surfers self-select out once they see the wave in action. The local bodyboard crew have this break thoroughly dialled and will be the most capable people in the water on any significant swell. Respect that hierarchy, watch from the road first, and do not paddle out on your first visit without understanding the exit.

Access & Facilities

No dedicated parking and no facilities on site. The break sits north of Playa Cavancha, accessible from the Iquique coastal road. Water quality is rated residential-level pollution, so post-surf hygiene matters. The reef itself is the primary hazard: shallow, uneven, and unforgiving on a wipeout. Do not surf alone.

Nearby Alternatives

When Intendencia is too heavy or the tide is wrong, Playa Cavancha offers a more forgiving city beach option in winter and on wind swell. Colegio, Iquique's most consistent performance wave, is close by and handles a wider range of conditions and skill levels.
