A three-section right-hand point on the south side of a Chilean peninsula, El Muro delivers genuine size and punch when S to W swells fill in from 6ft upward. Optimal conditions call for NE offshore winds, and the wave holds through all tides, though the shallow reef mid-section demands respect at any stage. Intermediate to advanced surfers will find the most reward here, weekend crowds can turn ultra-competitive, and summer brings hotel guests and beach traffic that muddies both the water and the lineup. Bottom: shallow reef point. Season: April through October. Consistency: medium. Arrive early on weekdays during the shoulder months of April or October to find the best balance of swell and crowd.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Weekends and summer months push the lineup toward ultra-crowded. Localism data is limited, but competitive pressure at a well-known point during peak swells is standard for northern Chile. Mid-week sessions in the April-to-October window will be noticeably quieter. Respect the local pecking order and do not snake sets on the outside.

Access & Facilities

No dedicated parking and no facilities on site. Hotels sit directly on the point, so access is straightforward on foot but amenities require planning ahead. Bring your own water and supplies. Shallow rocks are the primary hazard throughout all three sections.

Nearby Alternatives

When El Muro is too big or too crowded, Las Tacas offers a NW-facing beachbreak that stays clean in S winds, though it closes out in larger swells. Totoralillo's small circular peninsula holds three further pointbreaks worth checking on the same swell. Playa Blanca near Tongoy Bay is sheltered from S-W swells by Punta Lengua de Vaca and suits smaller, cleaner conditions.
