A thick, powerful right-hand reef break in Iquique that doesn't start breaking until the surf hits six to ten feet, then improves steadily with size. South to SW swells, reinforced by N swell windows, hit the submerged reef and unload into a vertical drop followed by a draining barrel section that can wall for 100m on good days. NE offshore winds glass it off in the morning. Advanced and expert surfers only. Weekends bring a competitive crew of local rippers and bodyboarders, and when it's firing, the lineup gets tense. Bottom: hard rock reef, shallow. Season: May through September. Consistency: medium but reliable when swell lines up. High tide gives more margin on the takeoff, low tide incoming is the sharpest version of the wave, so know your limits before paddling out. Cleanup sets can close out the channel with little warning, and outside indicator bomboras signal the bigger sets before they arrive. The Vertical Surf Shop sits directly across the road for wax, leashes, and local intel.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Locals are welcoming toward respectful visitors, but the lineup is competitive when swell is running. Show up with patience, surf within your ability, and earn waves rather than taking them. Dawn patrol reduces friction. Don't paddle straight into the peak on your first session.

Access & Facilities

El Colegio is in central Iquique, directly in front of the main high school on Balmaceda. A parking area sits to the right of the break. The Vertical Surf Shop is directly across the road. Watch the outside bombie for set indicators and stay aware of cleanup sets that can sweep through the channel.

Nearby Alternatives

Punta Una, just up the point, offers a more forgiving option when Colegio is maxing out or the crowd is stacked. Las Urracas, almost adjacent to the left of Colegio, is a different wave with its own character. Playa Cavancha, the main city beach, is a fallback for smaller days though it often closes out.
