A reliable beachbreak peak on Nova Scotia's Atlantic coast, The Moose sits inside Cow Bay and is the most popular beachbreak in the area, drawing a mixed crowd whenever swell pushes through. It works best on S to SE swell at waist high and above, with NW winds cleaning up the face. Low tide is the go-to for better shape and any tube sections the inside cove can throw. Beginners can manage it in smaller conditions, but when tropical cyclones push through late summer and fall, or frontal swells roll in from late fall through spring, the level jumps sharply. Bottom: rock shelf and sand. Season: late summer through spring, storm-dependent. Consistency: moderate. Come prepared for cold water, full suit required most of the year, and note that weekends and summer sessions can get crowded while weekday mornings often reward patience.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

This is the most popular beachbreak in the Cow Bay area, so expect company. Weekends and summer months draw the biggest crowds. Weekdays are noticeably quieter. Localism is described as doable and depends on who shows up, but attitudes are generally mellow. Standard lineup respect goes a long way here.

Access & Facilities

Park in the designated lot and walk to the beach. The main hazard is the cold, particularly in winter when air temperatures drop hard. Full wetsuit, hood, boots, and gloves are essential from fall through spring. Water quality is clean.

Nearby Alternatives

The point at the top of Cow Bay offers a long right-hand pointbreak peaking off the rock shelf tip, winding into an inside cove with its own tube sections. When The Moose is maxed out or too busy, that point can offer a more structured ride on the same swell.
