Left · PointAdvanced10–16 ftJan – Dec

A long, powerful left-hand point in Nova Scotia that only fires a handful of times a year, but delivers rides stretching 150-500m when it does. It needs a solid 3m-plus groundswell to switch on, and sits protected from the prevailing SW wind, which means when the swell hits right, conditions can be clean. Best size is 10-16ft, and at the top end of that range it becomes a serious wave requiring commitment. This is a winter wave, full stop. Summer visits will find nothing worth paddling out for. The crowd has grown with local rental operations, so the days of empty lineups are harder to come by, but mid-week sessions in marginal weather still offer breathing room. Bottom: point. Season: autumn to late winter. Consistency: low, two to four quality swells per year. If you're timing a trip around this wave specifically, build in at least a week to wait for the right swell window.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Historically a near-empty spot given the infrequent, high-threshold conditions. Commercial rental activity nearby has increased the number of surfers in the water on the rare days it breaks. Mid-week dawn patrol in winter still offers the best chance at a quieter lineup. Respect the locals who have been waiting months for this swell.

Access & Facilities

Nova Scotia winters demand a 5/4mm or 6/5mm suit minimum, with booties, gloves, and a hood. Water temperatures drop well below 10°C for much of the prime season. Bring everything you need since facilities near remote Nova Scotia points are minimal. A step-up or gun is the right call when this wave is actually running.

Nearby Alternatives

Nova Scotia's Atlantic-facing coastline picks up swell on multiple exposures, so when Left Point is too big or the swell angle is off, check nearby beach breaks that handle a wider range of conditions. On smaller swells that don't trigger the point, look for exposed beachies that start working at 1-2m.
