Point Michaud is a sandy beach-break on the Atlantic-facing shore of Cape Breton that delivers honest surf from knee-high fun to overhead-plus, without the lineup pressure that plagues better-known Maritime breaks. It responds to a wide swell window, handles everything from small summer rollers to solid fall and winter groundswells, and works across all tides on a forgiving sandy bottom. Offshore winds are your primary variable here: the beach is open to Atlantic fetch, so watch the forecast for NW to W winds to groom the faces. Beginners will find the easy paddle-out and sandy floor genuinely welcoming, while intermediates can find hollow sections on a good day. Crowds are nearly nonexistent mid-week and still thin on weekends, which is rare for a break with this range. Bottom: sand. Season: year-round, best late summer through fall. Consistency: moderate. Bring a mid-length or twin-fin for smaller days, on bigger groundswells a 6ft 4in shortboard gives you options.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Point Michaud is about as relaxed as it gets in Atlantic Canada. The lineup is almost always uncrowded, mid-week or weekend. Surf classes operate here in season, so expect learner energy in the water on summer mornings. The vibe is genuinely welcoming. Respect goes both ways, which is easy when there are more waves than surfers.

Access & Facilities

Point Michaud Provincial Park in L'Ardoise, Richmond County, puts you right at the beach, with road access directly to the sand. Basic provincial park facilities apply. The nearest services are in surrounding Cape Breton communities, so fill your tank and bring water and food. Water temps drop hard through winter, a 5/4 with hood and booties is not optional from November through April.

Nearby Alternatives

Cape Breton's Atlantic coastline holds several other beach-break options within driving distance when Point Michaud is blown out or flat. Explore the Richmond County coast for sheltered coves that pick up different swell angles on those days.
